- New York State Dental Public Health Programs
The CDC has provided synopses of state Dental Public Health Programs, including demographics, information about state infrastructure and workforce, dental health programs and administrative information. In addition, comparisons can be made between states.
- New York State Department of Health Dental Information
This website provides education and information about the effects of oral health across the lifespan; outlines Bureau of Dental Health programs and initiative aimed at prevention and treatment; and includes funding opportunities and resources.
- New York State Department of Health - County Health Assessment Indicators
Public health indicators are searchable by county and health topic area. Oral health indicators are based on data for third grade children and include rate of caries, sealants, fluoride, insurance information and visits to the dentist.
- Dental Health Certificate
Effective September 1, 2008 students enrolling in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten or first grade in a public elementary school in New York State are requested to present a dental health certificate indicating that a comprehensive dental examination performed.

- National Association of County and City Health Officials
A searchable database of public health practice models.This issue brief is the result of a collaborative effort between National Rural Health Association members and local public health agencies. This publication focuses on the challenges and strategies for recruitment and retention of public health workforce, as well as ideas for training students and the continued educational development of existing practitioners.
- Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors

- Partners in Prevention: Getting a Head Start on Oral Health
A collaboration between NYU College of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry and the NYS Head Start Association, this train the trainer website contains a continuing education course for non-oral health professionals who work with Early Head Start and Head Start. Topics include prenatal care, pregnancy, and oral health; oral pathology of the infant and young child; oral manifestation of systemic disease; tooth formation, tooth eruption, and teething; nutritive and nonnutritive sucking; acquisition of the oral flora; oral hygiene and preventing early childhood caries; fluoride benefits; diet and nutrition; oral facial trauma and child abuse; simple rules for good oral health; and a summary of anticipatory guidance.
- NYS Learning Standards for Health, Physical Education, & Family and Consumer Sciences.
New York State requires that all students meet the learning standards for Health at the elementary, intermediate, and commencement. Curriculum is left up to the individual school district, but the following guidance document was developed and approved in 2005 to assist teachers in meeting the health standards.

Best Practices
- Rural Healthy People 2010
A description of practice models focusing on improving oral health in rural populations throughout the United States. Models include the establishment of clinics, school-based prevention services, fluoride treatment, case management services and education. Some contain links to direct websites.
- Something to Smile About Dental Program
Initiated by the county health department, this model program in rural Maryland targets SCHIP eligible women and children who have had difficulty accessing care. Efforts include expanding provider network through assistance with claims and facilitating reimbursement, the creation of a dental clinic and community dental health education.
- Tioga Mobile Dental Services
The Tioga County Health Department and Rural Economic Area Partnership collaborated to secure funding for a mobile dental unit that serves as both a School Based Dental Clinic and an Article 28 Dental Clinic. Sustainability is possible through Medicaid and third party billing, the support of the Tioga County Legislature and community stakeholders.
- Best Practice Approach Report – State Oral Health Coalitions and Collaborative Partnership
This publication provides a framework for the implementation and evaluation of a State Oral Health Coalition, including key information that describes the public health strategy, determines the strength of evidence, and illustrates implementation with current practice examples.

A research center of Boston University – Goldman School of Dental Medicine is dedicated to reducing oral health disparities through a combination of community outreach, clinical research and basic science.
- University of Michigan School of Dentistry
Current research projects include oral health disparities of African American children ages 0-5 years old, oral cancer detection and preventions, and other health services research.
- Univ of California, San Francisco – Center to Address Disparities in Children’s Oral Health
The research center strives to identify cultural, environmental, workforce, behavioral, and biologic factors associated with health disparities, to improve identification of at risk children and to provide successful interdisciplinary interventions.
- University of Washington – Northwest/Alaska Center to Reduce Oral Health Disparities
A research center aimed at reducing oral health disparities in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska through development of basic and applied knowledge that addresses the needs of the poor, minority and rural children and their caretakers who suffer a disproportionate share of oral disease.
- New York University – Oral Cancer Center
The research center works to identify factors contributing to oral cancer disparities, to determining new techniques for diagnosis, to promote the study of bioethical issues related to reducing minority health disparities and to train scientists for careers in oral cancer disparities research.
